Woodblock Print, Carbon Copies, Xerox, and good humored people
Nianhua workshops at SFMOMA involved museum visitors to produce seemingly “auspicious” cultural objects. NianHua prints, made by traditional woodblock technique, depict beneficent deities and are produced specifically for the New Year.
Nianhua Workshops took the form of an on-site assembly line/factory that mirrored existing relationships between the cost of labor and profit. Museum visitors participated in an hour of free labor; their efforts paid for in prints. The surplus of their production was then sold by myself as ‘hand-made/made-in America’ woodblock prints for $12.99.
