Hawflakes are a Chinese candy made from the Hawthorn fruit. The coin-shaped candies are small discs, only about 2mm thick, packaged in brightly colored rolls, reminiscent of firework packaging. Its enlarged size in sculpture form is to emphasize the distinctive place this snack has among my, and many other Chinese-Americans’, childhood memories.
